The Singh Project

This year saw the launch of The Singh Project, an art gallery featuring  photography focusing on the beard and the Turban. It took the UK by storm and is about to go global. Those Two Girls got the opportunity to view the artwork at an event hosted by EY The Sikh Network last month.

By Simmy & Jaskiran
So who are the geniuses behind these works of art? Amit and Naroop, two men who were born and raised in West London. Their scope of work already covers a range of artists and with 50 cent, Tinie Tempah and Dynamo already under their belt, these guys have a strong foundation to their name.

We were lucky enough to get insight into their thought process on bringing The Singh Project together. It all started with “The Beard”. Beards have become a sudden fashion trend among young men, however Singh’s have worn their beards with pride for over 500 years. A beard and Turban is the most distinguishing part of a Sikh man.

What happened next? They set out to see what was already out there, if there was anything that portrayed the modern Singh. But there was nothing that focused on what they had invisioned thus The Singh Project was born.

First stop, Southall. They basically bombarded a few Sikh men from different generations and started snapping pictures in their studio showing men from all different walks of life. They wanted to ensure that their Beard and Turban were the focus but at the same time wanted those who would view these pictures to think…who is this man? What does he do? What is he passionate about? They wanted to capture the essence of modern Sikhism.

They were able to get well-known names such as Singh Street Style, Magic Singh and Narvir Singh and 33 other very intriguing Sikh Men. We viewed a selection of their work at Ernst &Young London head offices where the EY Sikh Network hosted an exhibition. The artwork has been cleverly captured, drawing you in straight away. Being two British Sikh women, it was beautiful to see something on display which was related to our faith and knowing it was being admired by so many people around the world.

The Sikh Project is now going oversees to New York City and we are in no  doubt that they won’t be stopping there.

We took so many photos from the exhibition so take a look at some of them below.

See the full range of artwork on The Singh Project website where you can also buy a selected few pieces.
